University Medal in Law Masters Criminology (University of Sydney) – 2008 Admitted as Legal Practitioner – 2003 Admitted to Bar – 2019 After almost 5 years in the Dispute Resolution team at Mallesons Stephen Jaques, Emma spent a further 12 years at the NSW Crown Solicitor’s Office. During this time, she practised as a solicitor advocate, and also held senior roles including from October 2016 to February 2018, as the Director of the Inquiries Practice Group, and from March to November 2018, as the A/Assistant Crown Solicitor of the Inquiries and Criminal Law Group. With extensive experience in the inquisitorial jurisdiction, Emma has been involved in many significant inquests in NSW, including the death of Vanessa Anderson (in 2007-8), the inquest into four deaths following a collision between a ferry and recreational vessel on Sydney Harbour in 2007, and the 2016 inquest into the death of NSW passengers on board Malaysian Airlines Flight MH-17. From December 2012 to May 2014, Emma was also Special Counsel assisting with the ‘Special Commission of Inquiry into matters relating to the police investigation of certain child sexual abuse allegations in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle’. In addition to advising on investigatory processes and procedures, and extensive appearance work in the coronial jurisdiction, Emma has significant experience advising in parole matters before the State Parole Authority, contempt prosecutions and post-sentence detention applications under Crimes (High Risk Offenders) Act 2006 and Terrorism (High Risk Offenders) Act 2017.
