Peggy Dwyer SC was admitted to the Bar in 2010, after more than 10 years work as a solicitor, specialising firstly in criminal and later coronial law. As a barrister, Peggy specialises in criminal matters, including white collar and regulatory crime, coronial inquests, and commissions of inquiry. Peggy has a significant interest in medical law and appears in disciplinary tribunals, for both prosecution and defence. She has appeared as lead counsel in jury trials in NSW, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Peggy has a busy practice in coronial inquests, appearing as Counsel Assisting the Coroner and Counsel for interested parties, including corporations and government departments. In 2025 she was Senior Counsel Assisting the State Coroner in the Inquests into the deaths of seven people at Bondi Junction. In 2023-2024, Peggy appeared as Counsel Assisting the Northern Territory Coroner in the inquest into the death of Kumanjayi Walker and the landmark inquests into the deaths of women resulting from domestic violence in the NT. Peggy appeared as Counsel Assisting the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, and as Counsel in the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory. From 2005 to 2008, Peggy was the Managing Criminal Lawyer for the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA), the largest criminal law practice in the Northern Territory. In addition to managing the service, she appeared in jury trials in the Northern Territory Supreme Court and in appeals in NSW Supreme Court, the Court of Criminal Appeal and as Junior Counsel in the High Court. From 2008-2010, she was a Solicitor Advocate for the NSW Crown Solicitors Officer before being called to the Bar. In 2000, Peggy was awarded a doctorate from the University of Edinburgh. Her Ph.D focused on drug trafficking - specifically, the regulation of synthetic drugs of abuse and the precursor chemicals used in their manufacture. Peggy was the first Associate to Justice Michael Kirby in the High Court of Australia between the years 1995 and 1996.
